The Power of Reiki

Reiki, more than other modalities it seems, has been interpreted in so many different ways and has so many schools of thought and different traditions with claim to authenticity. Here is an introductory view of some of the general aspects of this remarkable healing art.

All of us need a form of healing at some time. We can better understand the nature of the healing process if we look at ourselves and each other from a larger perspective and adopt the traditional view, that is, that we exist in a physical, emotional and spiritual whole which is connected to other lives and the greater life of our natural universe.

Healing with Reiki

Reiki is an ancient form of natural healing, in which the practitioner transfers healing energy to the patient via the touch (laying on of hands). The practitioner is initiated into the use of particular Universal healing symbols which connect him/her to the Universal Life Force energy. Channeling of this Reiki energy promotes healing on all levels of being and can therefore bring greater clarity and wholeness into our lives.

Our present world demands that we grow and develop at a rapid pace. To cope with these demands and remain whole and healthy we must be able to reach into our psyche to bring forth and develop the unique skills that lie deep within us. We cannot realise our full potential if our better characteristics are repressed or denied by the walls of our own fears and beliefs, which act as walls of energy or blockages between our potential and our own conscious minds. Therefore, we confront the world with only parts of our True Self. The entire body relies on all its parts to function with the optimal flow of life energy.

If there are barriers that prevent the force from flowing freely, our cells, organs and tissues consequently become weak, sluggish and stagnant and gradually degenerate. With time these conditions can bring on illness and disease. In order to clear the disease, deep healing is necessary to begin the restoration of Life Force to those particular areas where the energy has been blocked. This can be achieved with the use of Reiki healing.

Following a session of Reiki, patients have reported feeling more refreshed, stronger and clearer. With repeated sessions, long-standing physical symptoms and chronic complaints are reduced or disappear. The healing also assists in psychological and spiritual transformation. During the healing process blockages are removed from the energy field and they begin to experience a greater understanding of themselves. The individual begins to let go of illness-producing thought and behavior patterns and sees more clearly how to live a healthier and happier lifestyle.

Universal Life Energy is not a new phenomenon. Many traditional cultures believed in the power of this force and practice various healing techniques to bring the individual back in to balance and harmony, seeing all life as an entity unto itself - a life force that exists in all physical objects.

This flow of life energy manifests in individual people, animals, insects, plants and inanimate objects, such as rocks. The ancient Chinese called this infinite force Chi; the Greeks called it Pneuma; the Japanese Qi; the Indians Prana; and the Native Americans called it the Flow of Spirit. Reiki acts as a bridge between the two worlds of healing: the modern and the alternative forms.

Today Reiki has established a place of respect thanks to many health practitioners who have used Reiki to help others towards greater health and wholeness. You can apply Reiki healing to help yourself, your friends and your family. Or with practice, study and continual self-refinement, you can become a practitioner of this powerful healing tool. There are no harmful side effects with Reiki: it is safe and subtle, yet highly effective.

Reiki Levels I & II

In order to utilise this remarkable form of healing energy it is necessary that individuals undertake a series of initiations and attunements so that their body can clearly channel this healing power. Incorporated with the initiations are the symbols, which are required to tap into this energy and the training, which provides you with the essential tools needed to practise Reiki.

There are three levels of Reiki. These are Reiki I, Reiki II and the Mastership level. Reiki I gives the healer a permanent attunement to Reiki. Once initiated, healers can channel the Reiki for themselves and others. This is the foundation of all three levels and must be fully comprehended before
progressing to higher levels.

Reiki II requires further initiations for attunement to the symbols utilised in this level. These symbols can increase the power of the healing and include techniques for absent (distant) healing. This level will also allow you to tap into the collective consciousness and will enable you to extract important information from the patient's subconscious mind. Gaining this knowledge can speed up the healing process considerably.

The healing work itself operates on the human energy field, which surrounds the physical body and acts as a connection between the physical body and the Universal Life Energy. There are seven energy bodies that exist in the energy field, each corresponding to a particular area of the body and related organs and glands. They also correspond to various psychological and emotional states. The healer's work here is concerned with repairing, restructuring and recharging these energy bodies. It may also mean re-balancing overcharged areas with the rest of the field.

The human energy field is directly connected to and expresses human physical, emotional, mental and spiritual layers of being. Each of these layers is also associated with a human level of life experience. The first layer is associated with the function of our physical body, health, pleasure and physical comfort. The need of this layer is to enjoy a healthy physical body and all the pleasures that go with it. The
second layer is related to the personal emotional relationship to ourselves and has to do with self-acceptance. The second layer wants us to love and accept ourselves exactly as we are.

The third layer is concerned with mental clarity and the ability to understand a situation in a clear and rational way. The fourth layer has to do with loving relationships between friends and family, and is associated with our interpersonal emotional life. Our need here is to love in many types of relationships, that is, with friends, lovers, family and colleagues. The fifth layer has to do with the alignment of divine will, to make the decision to speak and to follow the truth. The need on this layer is to speak and be in our own truth. The sixth layer is concerned with divine love and spiritual ecstasy. The need here is to experience our own personal spirituality and unconditional love. The seventh layer is related to the connection with the divine mind and the understanding of the pattern of the greater Universal Mind.
This is the layer that holds one's beliefs be they in accordance with divine law or not. Our need on this layer is to know serenity.

Mastership Level

The Mastership level requires a thorough understanding of the deeper levels mentioned above. At this level one would become a teacher of Reiki and therefore a channel of pure love itself. It is important to outline here that if a practitioner decides to tread along this path of higher learning, they undergo the required teachings and training necessary to occupy the Masters level. A Master in any field is required to undergo intensive training, which in some instances can take many years or even a lifetime of study.
A Master, in any area, is one who has obtained "the fullest degree of competence in a subject" (Encyclopedia of Mind, Body and Spirit)

One should therefore be mindful of teachers in the field of Reiki who aspire to providing students with a Mastership in a weekend seminar. It is possible to attain Levels I and II in a weekend, however, a Mastership in a weekend is impossible. It simply cannot be done. One cannot obtain a Mastership in any field in one weekend. The spiritual field is the same as any other. Why should it be any different? To obtain any trade qualification, for example, involves one to five years of study! One should be wary of those who profess to provide the student with a Reiki Mastership in a day or weekend workshop. It is both physically and spiritually impossible to achieve such a task. You should thoroughly investigate the nature of these courses to ensure that you are spending your money wisely.

Reiki healing is not spiritual healing per se. Everything we do in life is spiritual, however, that does not mean, for example, that Prana, Reiki or crystal healing is spiritual healing. It is like the difference between Western and Eastern medicine: both have the same aim, yet the method is different. So too is the difference in method between Reiki and Spiritual Healing.

Reiki is a method of healing which requires personalised tuition. The traditional means of passing on knowledge, by which the Mystery Schools have operated for thousands of years, requires that the healer undergo special training and personalised initiations so the that the healer will be able to channel the energy properly. Out of respect for past Masters and the energy itself, Reiki should be taught via traditional methods whereby the student is provided with the right guidance and support required to become a practitioner.

Reiki healing is a powerful tool for both spiritual and personal development and should thus be treated with the respect that this healing energy deserves. As we respect ourselves, so too we respect the Power that enables us to be a channel for this wonderful gift of love and energy.
